TREVOR NATHAN

I have been sculpting full time since 2003, working primarily with Oamaru limestone from the South Island of New Zealand and New Zealand native woods.

I like to create a play with light and shadow in my work so that the viewer’s perspective alters as the light conditions change throughout the day. I also like to draw the viewer’s eye around and through the work, rather than provide a static form.

Having worked within the signwriting industry for a period of 20 years, I noticed that computers had increasingly taken over the artistic aspects of my profession. Leaving the workforce, I enrolled as an adult student at Waiariki Institute of Technology for the Diploma of Art and Design, but before I completed the course I found my passion for three dimensional form and initially for the medium of stone and I have never looked back.

Being of New Zealand Maori and European descent, I am strongly influenced by my dual heritage and the impact of both cultures in contemporary New Zealand society.

I work primarily from my home studio and participate widely in symposium and events primarily in the North Island. I welcome the opportunity to talk to visitors at my studio and particularly enjoy designing commission pieces for individual clients to suit their specific sites.

Ka Kite Ano.
